Milkshakes are alkaline… until they’re not!

Which is my way of saying, “it’s all about the ingredients”. Now that is true of every food and drink in the USDA database. But this category might be more confusing.

Milkshake Confusion

Our first confusion is the name. Is it the common milkshake? Or the USDA milk shake as two separate words? Maybe you have an opinion. Because the world is full of very strong opinions on this matter. So I’ve decided to ignore it because…

The main confusion is the ingredients. Here again, everyone has a different recipe. Also, be aware this food category is more than milkshakes. Because the USDA official title is Milk shakes and other dairy drinks. So it includes a variety of milk-based drinks that have different flavorings. The best way to avoid confusion is to make your own shakes from scratch. Then you can calculate the PRAL value of your recipe. Or send me your recipe in the feedback form below. Then I’ll calculate PRAL values for you.

Acid-Alkaline Milk Shakes List

I list shakes with the lowest PRAL index first. Because these have the lowest acid load. So the most alkalizing dairy drinks show first. But you can click the food table headings to change sort order.

Alkaline or Acid Milkshakes

For the milk shake category, the average PRAL values are -0.15 per 100 grams and -0.24 per 100 calories. To put this in context, compare with other
dairy foods in the Food Category List.

Your Alkaline Milk Shakes

Remember, factors such as growing conditions, variety, and preparation methods affect all food nutrients. USDA database values are an average of many samples. So your PRAL values for milkshakes will vary from day to day. But they are always an estimate of actual acid load on your kidneys. Which I explain more in the notes about PRAL principles on the category list page.
